The Founder
Dr. Shah Nurul Islam was a pioneering eye surgeon in Moulvibazar, guided by a philosophy that taught the spirituality of service. He was born in 1941 in a small village of Habinganj district in Bangladesh. He achieved MBBS Degree from Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka in 1968. He participated in a one-year training program organised by I.A.P.B (International Agency for Prevention of Blindness). He also took part in a training program on '
Welfare and Education of Asian People
', held in Japan by the support of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Japan in 1987.
He introduced a number of innovative programmes to reduce the curse of blindness in Moulvibazar, including the outreach eye camps, school sight testing program and so on.
He joined Boys Scout in his school life and took part in divisional Scout Rally and International Scout Jamboree as a troop leader. In 1968, he joined a Medical relief team as a volunteer in some flood affected areas of Munshiganj and Manikganj district. Later in 1970, he joined another medical relief team in Patuakhali and Golachipa.
In the liberation war of 1971, he served the freedom fighters as a physician. For that reason he was captured by the Pakistani militant and imprisoned from May to November, 1971. After liberation, he joined post-war relief and rehabilitation programs.
In 1975, he was elected as the Chairman of the Management Committee of Ali Amzad Govt. Primary School, Moulvibazar. He helped to renovate the school building by raising fund from local source. Besides, he helped for renovation of Sayerpur Laxmibala Govt. Primary School, Moulvibazar as a Management Committee Member.
He was the Vice President of Red Cross, Moulvibazar during the period from 1972 to 1976.
In 1977, the Private Medical Practitioners Association, Moulvibazar organised a free Friday Clinic in the Municipality hall of Moulvibazar under his supervision.
After successful 3-4 days' program of the Eye Camp in 1974 organized by BNSB Chittagong he cherished the dream to render eye care service in Moulvibazar. In 1981, he founded BNSB, Moulvibazar with the cordial help of some local philanthropist & served as the Honorary General Secretary of this organization till his death. He took the most active part for establishing his long cherished dream, the Eye Hospital under supervision of BNSB, Moulvibazar. To raise fund for the hospital, he visited the UK, USA and Canada in 1987-88. During that visit, the non-resident Bangladeshis helped him by donating whole-heartedly.
He was also selected by the Deputy Commissioner of Moulvibazar, as the representative of District Social Welfare Committee, member of District Task Force/ Watson Committee.
His works and its remarkable achievements have gained international recognition. He was the recipient of many national and international awards. Such as-
In 1989, he was awarded as the Best Social Worker by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh.
In 1990, he was again awarded '
Emran Memorial Gold Medal
' as the best Eye Camp Organizer by the then First Lady, Mrs. Rowshan Ershad.
In 1997, he was selected as the best Social Worker in Sylhet division and awarded '
The Social Welfare Medal
' by the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.
In April 22, 2006 he departed from this world by leaving behind his wife, 3 sons, 2 daughter-in laws, 2 grand-children and so many friends and well wishers.
